The girls’ and boys’ soccer teams opened up region play last Friday as both teams went head to head with Aquinas. The girls’ team was able to get their region season off on the right foot, taking down Aquinas 4-3. The boys’ weren’t as fortunate, losing a heartbreaker in the final minutes by a score of 3-2.
The girls took a while to get going but once they did there was no catching them. The Raiders were led by their scoring duo of Mary Jane Meyer and Lloya Stevens who each registered a goal in the first half. Aquinas tried to make a game of it, but second half goals by Macy Sheley and Lloya Stevens put the game out of reach. The Raiders held off the comeback attempt and secured the 4-3 victory.
The boys’ team looked strong right out of the gate on Friday. Ethan Taylor registered two early goals on assists by J.T. Gard and Lincoln Jepson that put the Raiders up 2-0. A late first half goal by Aquinas cut the Raiders’ lead in half heading into the halftime. The second half was a stalemate between the two teams until Aquinas was able to tie things up when a questionable no-call on an offsides led to a shot hitting the post and bouncing back into the net. As the game was coming to an end Aquinas found one final goal on a corner that was unable to be cleared with just under five minutes to play. Aquinas went on to see out the victory 3-2.
Now both teams look to make a statement with a week filled with non-region games starting on Wednesday against Holy Trinity. Be sure to keep up with all things Raider Athletics by following “SCPS Athletics” on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter and by downloading the “SCPS Raiders” app!
